The United Nations (UN) no longer solely evaluates the progress of a country based on economic growth. Now, however, a nation is considered to be more developed if it is able to make its citizens happier (World Happiness Index).
This year, 2023, Finland was selected as the happiest nation for the sixth consecutive year. Here are the data. The Finland value is 7.82. Based on citizen assessments, that is the highest figure for the entire world. The query is: how and what transpired in Finland? Why its citizens consider Finland to be the nation most capable of making them joyful.
There are five valid justifications.
The first cause is the rapid economic growth of Finland. Current GDP per capita in this country is $54,351 USD. The average income per person is approximately 60 million rupiah. This quantity is approximately thirteen times the per capita income of Indonesians (approximately 4,073 USD in 2023). With funds of this magnitude, Finland has very strong economic capacity to realize welfare programs for its people.
The second factor is government policy. Finland provides a comprehensive welfare system. Free education and health care are provided to the populace. The government even lavishes newborn children's parents with lengthy tax deductions. Family time takes precedence.
Environmental protection constitutes the third factor. The air quality is exceptional. The government takes deliberate actions regarding the issue. Finland is home to numerous forests. People typically have second homes in the woods. The locals are close, unified, and truly enjoy the beauty of nature because the rivers and lakes are kept in excellent condition.
The fourth cause is sisu. Finnish is home to this idiomatic and elusive phrase. Sisu is a life philosophy or mentality of the Finns, who are always seeking wisdom. Even when faced with adversity, this attitude always seeks the bright side. Likewise, a hardy and resilient demeanor. The widespread use of Sisu strengthens the reliability of the system. Residents are really well cared after, so have faith in each other and pitch in to assist out. There is also a relatively low crime rate. And personal freedom of lifestyle choice is respected.
Important number five: there is very little corruption in the government. In a classification using the index (CPI, 2022), Finland is one of the three least corrupt nations.
These five factors make Finland the happiest country in the world for its citizens. As of the year 2023, Finland has been voted number one a staggering six times in a row.
Indonesia, too, has to go in this direction, creating a better life for its people. How to? At the very least, we can begin to rid the government of malfeasance. So as to increase the amount of funds available for community welfare programs.
