In a few days in August 2023, Jakarta's air quality will be the worst in the world. Worst in the world yet again! However, only a small percentage of Indonesians are concerned with environmental issues. We commence with data.
The August 2023 LSI Denny survey is as follows: Only 15.5% of the population actively seeks out environmental news. In contrast, 77.1% of respondents said they never searched for news about environmental issues!
The majority of our population never seeks environmental news or even seeks it out.
Compared to the world's population that cares about and pays attention to environmental issues, a very small proportion of Indonesians are concerned about the environment.
For instance, in the majority of Western European nations, over 80 percent of the population is concerned with environmental issues. Even beyond 90%.
Why, one could ask. Why are so few of our people interested in environmental news?
It is commonly stated that this is due to competing priorities. In Indonesia, the population is more influenced by basic necessities. These are more fundamental requirements, such as the need for stable employment and sustenance.
However, the environment is a necessity as well!
It relates directly to our health. What happens if the air we breathe is causing you harm? The air that we breathe is hazardous. We consume food, and food is unhealthy. Because the environment is contaminated, everything is polluted. Our health will be affected as well.
It is not accurate to state that the environment is not a fundamental requirement because it has a direct impact on our health.
This should serve as a wake-up call. We should be more concerned about the environment. Furthermore, there have been cases. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, continues to rank among the most polluted cities in the globe.
