Is it conceivable to reach the age of 100 in good health and happiness?
We commence with the news. This is from the February 15, 2018 issue of Time magazine. There are five locations in the news where people live the longest and healthiest lives.
The following statistics pertain to individuals who live beyond 100 years of age. It has been determined that Okinawa has the highest concentration of centenarians. There are 81 men and women over 100 years old among the city's population of 100,000. Okinawa is an island located off the coast of the country of Japan.
In the second rank, the nation of Japan as a whole -- with 48 individuals over the age of 100 per 100,000 inhabitants on average. Then came France, followed by the United States.
It is essential that we understand why so many Okinawans live to be over 100 years old. Existing research has been conducted in this area. These are the four guiding principles, and we can practice them even if we are not Okinawan.
This fundamental principle is known as Hara Hachi Bu. If we take the popular interpretation, cease eating before you are full. Even though we have a strong craving for food, it is sufficient for our bodies to be 80% full of food. Allow 20% of our organism to remain void. It is beneficial to hormone circulation in our bodies. Residents of Okinawa consume purple sweet potatoes, seaweed, fruits, and vegetables daily.
Walk, move, and exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to get up and moving, whether at home, at the office, or out in public. Moving around releases endorphins, which have a calming effect on the mind and body.
Third principle: maintain intimate ties with the community and warm personal relationships. Make time to spend with family, friends, the community, or the people we love. Express affection, share experiences, cultivate a life of mutual care, assist one another, and disseminate optimism during this time spent together. Such fellowship provides the warmth our spirits require.
The fourth and most essential principle is to have a life purpose, or ikigai. We must set the Life Calling choice. In this existence, we pursue more than just our own interests. However, there are causes greater than ourselves that we wish to defend. Whether it be the environment, human rights issues, a life of charity, a life of virtue, fighting for justice, and so on. Living and taking part in these massive things, no matter how small, is what gives life its significance.
I wish to live a thousand more years, Charil Anwar declared. But if you make it to over a century, that's more than enough.
